What are Glassboards? It's a private social network for groups. Sounds like just one more thing to have to worry about, right? Well, they're actually really awesome. Why? They are basically discussion boards around specific topics with other people that are also interested in the same topic-- and there are two ways to get notified when someone posts in a board. You can download the app to get push notifications through your phone (I highly recommend this feature) or you can have messages pushed to your email. Unless you have mastered the art of being an email ninja, it is probably best to use the app or access Glassboard through the web (email notifications can get really noisy). Something to note, by default, both email and app push notifications are turned on-- you can control these settings and turn them on or off! (You can also set "quiet hours" if you don't want to get notified during certain times of the day).
So, how are we using Glassboards at 804RVA? Lots of ways!! We've created a members only Glassboard for our community and we use it as a message board to talk about happy hours, post links to blog posts, make suggestions about community building, and we get to enjoy the witty banter of some of our community members. Think of it like a private twitter account where you can type more than 140 characters and speak to your group in a casual way without having to maintain an email list or figure out everyone's twitter handles.
How can you use it? We'll be posting acccess to some of our "semi-private" message boards so you can join the conversations that interest you. Look for separate posts about the following Glassboards: RVA4EDU, Business Toolbox, RVAPowerPlant, StartRVA, Who's Hiring, Available for Work, Code for America and more!
