I am often asked about the state of investment capital right here in RVA.  Well, this is not an exhaustive list by any means but if you are thinking your startup needs a little money for equity support to change the world then hear are a few local organizations of interest (In alphabetical order).  If I missed your favorite source of 'dollars & sense' inspiration in RVA please let me know with a quick comment and we will put them on the list!  Remember looking for those seed and early stage givers first and foremost!

Harbert Management Corporation has a venture capital office right in downtown RVA.  Now, I would not call them a seed or very early stage investor but they are very open to offering guidance and if you need growth capital I would give them a call.

New Dominion Angels describes itself this way

"New Dominion Angels is an investor group formed to capitalize early-stage, Virginia-based companies. We are not a managed fund. We are a group of like-minded members who make individual decisions whether to invest in companies that present to the group."

I happen to know they have roots here in RVA and Northern VA too!  They definitely are on the lookout for the best and brightest early ideas and would love to here from you!

One of RVA's newest venture teams, they may be down the alphabetical list but are a great first stop.  The NRV team is open, candid and thinking progressively about how to spark central VA's entrepreneurial spirit through high growth, high potential founders and companies.  If you are early stage then you and a part of the RVA community then you clearly need to know  New Richmond Ventures

Thanks, Todd. Here is another one, Blue Heron Capital, which is Tom Benedetti and Andrew Tichenor's group here in RVA.

"Blue Heron Capital is a private equity firm focused on growth equity and lower market buyout opportunities. We bring a talented group of operating professionals with decades of experience building and managing companies."

Here is there About: http://www.blueheroncap.com/about

Chris...I almost included Blue Heron but given the nature of the group I thought maybe directing startups that direction may not be what they want? Thoughts? Similar tough call on Harbert.
